I had my first baby photo shoot this morning!!! I am so relieved that it is over. 😅 It went pretty well, although there were a few things that weren't great about it. There were also things that went really well!
I'll do positives first. I was comfortable. That part really surprised me. I mean, my body was uncomfortable and I was sweating, because I had the heater going in there and I was squatting and scooting around, but I was comfortable working with Ivan and Jenna and that was all good. I felt confident in what I was doing (even though in retrospect there are plenty of things I did wrong). I was prepared. I'm so thankful for the work I put into prepping! All of my backdrops were ready, my blankets were ready, my distracting toys were ready, my photogenic toys were ready, outfits were ready, lighting was ready, and room was ready! That part went smoothly and was a breeze. Also, Ivan was in a good mood. Big plus! I didn't expect him to last long, because babies just don't, but we got about 20-25 minutes of good mood and easy-going baby.
The biggest negative I have is that the beanbag I made was way too small (as I assumed it would be). Ivan almost rolled off of it over and over again. I couldn't put him into many positions, because there was just nowhere for him to go. So we just had a back pose and a belly pose and that's about it! I'll need to get more filling in that beanbag so that I don't have this same issue in the future. I also probably should have switched lenses at some point. I only used my 50mm, which I really like, but I just couldn't get any distance from him and only got one or two shots that included his whole body. The only other negative, which is tiny, is that Jenna kind of rushed out when Ivan started to get cranky. I hoped that she would give him a snack or just give him a little break and then try again for another backdrop (we didn't get to my Valentine's Day props), but she was ready to get going. I'm sure a paying client that actually wanted to do a photoshoot would be different and would want to get as much out of it as possible, so it's not a huge deal.
I've only edited this one picture and I spent over an hour on it. 😳 I kept coming back to his coloring, because he seemed a little washed out to me, but also red, so that was kind of tough to find a nice, middle ground. I also used a couple of photoshop techniques I've never used before, which always takes me a while to figure out. I think that future editing will probably only take 5-10 minutes per photo, if that. I love his little foot in the background. :)
