February 5, 2024 - Monday
Today did not go the way I expected it to go. Ollie woke me up at 3am, standing at the side of my bed, with her hands cupped around her mouth. I groggily asked her what was up and she just continued to stand there. I asked again, a little more urgently, and she moved her hands and splashed vomit all over the side of my bed. The poor girl had thrown up in her hands and held the rest in her mouth so she wouldn't make a mess! While I did really appreciate that, I also felt terrible. I got everything cleaned up, got her a bowl to throw up in, and got her back to bed. 30 minutes later, I heard her whimpering on the monitor and held her while she threw up again. And on and on for two hours. After that, it was over. Not so bad, as far as bugs go, honestly. When I got up at 7:30 for the day, I had a knot in my stomach and spent the entire day wondering when it was my turn to barf, but it never came. *shrug* Maybe we'll get lucky?
I did finally get to meet with Dr. Boland to discuss Ruby's evaluation with her. The doc told me that she believes Ruby is "twice exceptional", meaning that she's intellectually gifted (>99th% in spatial reasoning!) and also has ADHD, in her opinion. In a way, I'm relieved that it's not autism, but in another way, I feel like ADHD is a little harder to explain, if that makes any sense. Like, lots of people have ADHD and it doesn't look anything like Ruby. Dr. Boland says it's the "twice exceptional" thing that makes it look different in her. She showed me this whole chart of ways that 2e looks like autism. I have a few concerns that I don't feel are explained by this...mostly her sensory and food stuff, but some things make perfect sense, like how social she is and how fantastic she is at imaginative play. We're going to move forward with this for now (whatever that means) and reassess in 8 months to see where we're at.
Other than that, we just did school today. We had to skip our field trip to the popcorn factory :( :( :(. I'm so sad about that. We've been waiting for it since November. And we had to skip HC tonight, just in case I infect someone accidentally. For all I know, we could all be carrying around a stomach virus! I'm just hoping and praying I don't wake up to more vomit tonight: my own or anyone else's!
